Logan County, Ky, Genealogical Society, Inc.

Old Jail circa 1869, now the Logan County Genealogical Society Inc.

Volunteers met at the Logan County Public Library in July of 1979 to file the genealogical papers of the late Mrs. J. Wells Vick. As weekly work sessions continued, the Logan County, KY, Genealogical Society was formed. By 1981, the group had incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) or non-profit organization.

Purposes expanded to include
Preserving of genealogical and historical materials
Building a library of books and references to aid genealogical research
Sharing knowledge of research lines and methods
Encouraging preservation of existing cemeteries
Encouraging preservation of court records in Logan County
Promoting an interest in genealogy

In February of 1980, the group was given the responsibility by the Logan County Fiscal Court to clean, organize, repair, and preserve old court records held in various buildings in the county. The old jail building constructed in the 1870's and remodeled in the 1970's was designated as the repository.

What volunteers can do to help researchers

Identify local resources one might order that would extend knowledge of ancestors. Volunteers spend about an hour per request to list resources that might help one to research ancestors from Logan County, KY, but cannot do extensive research for others. Professional researchers can be recommended.

Copy county court clerk records, marriages, wills, deeds, etc. at $1.00 per page plus postage. Circuit court records, equity and ordinary cases, are copied at 25 cents a page.

Provide a list of others researchers working on the same surnames.

Loan equipment and supplies to trained personnel for the preservation of local cemeteries and stones.

Teach basic genealogy classes each year, providing after-hours research time for local participants.
